About Karin

Thank you for visiting Perspective Parenting. Why did I pick this business name? I believe that when we are in the thick of parenting, we can get stuck. Some perspective can help us get unstuck.

We get stuck on what we think is “right” or “wrong”, stuck on “how we’ve always done it before”, stuck on, “well that’s how my parents did it”, stuck on, “but that’s what the teacher told me to do.” Sometimes it helps to get another perspective.

As a parent coach, I support and guide parents/guardians to look at things from all angles in order to come up with solutions to challenges. I draw from research on human and child development, psychology, cognitive science and communication sciences.

I spent twenty years working as a speech-language pathologist on transdisciplinary teams for families of children birth-6. When occupational therapists, early childhood educators, special educators, nurses, family liaisons, counselors and physical therapists and I collaborated, we always came up with richer and more effective solutions than when we worked alone. We looked at the whole child, and the whole family system.

You might ask, why isn’t my child potty training with ease? It could be due to physical, sensory or psychological reasons. Let’s explore from all angles to get some perspective.

Maybe you’re wondering, how do I help my toddler when they tantrum? Do they need more boundaries or more control? Do they need visual instructions? More sleep? Less sensory information? Let’s discuss to gain perspective.

And sometimes, we just need to settle into what is developmentally typical or simply just typical for our own, individual children. We need to consider the situation from the child’s perspective. Oftentimes, when we do that, we realize nothing is wrong. There is no problem that needs solving. We just need time for development to take its course and to find ways to take care of ourselves when life get challenging.
